Martin Heidegger

Was he the greatest philosopher of the twentieth century?
Or was he someone who cynically used his romance with the Jewish Hannah Arendt to whitewash his own Nazi-tainted past?
On the one hand, he was a country boy who felt compelled to move to the city. A man who wanted to lead his leader, the Führer.
On the other hand, his love for a Jewish woman lasted a lifetime.
He was looked upon with contempt by Adorno and the Frankfurt School. In Germany, he was suspected of creating dull patriotic art. In France, he was held in high esteem by Jean-Paul Sartre, who considered him to be the founder of existentialism, as well as by Foucault, Lacan, Derrida and Lévinas as a trailblazing thinker.
